[...] Returning to the thread of how humans change behavior, I have had a couple conversations with friends who have attended a Landmark Education event. In fact, they both suggested that the Landmark Forum was a profound experience in their development. According to its website, “The Landmark Forum is specifically designed to bring about positive and permanent shifts in the quality of your life. These shifts are the direct cause for a new and unique kind of freedom and power. The freedom to be absolutely at ease no matter where you are, who you’re with, or what the circumstance - the power to be in action effectively in those areas that are important to you.” I am thinking of attending a session in the future…Does anyone have experience with Landmark? - Scott J.
[...] Returning to the discussion on what it takes for humans to change behavior, I would like to spend some time on Boyatzis’ Intentional Change Theory. For an in depth discussion on this theory, readers should purchase Primal Leadership or Resonant Leadership. Boyatzis suggests that there are five major “discoveries.” First, individuals must identify their “ideal self.” Bill George, author of True North might call this the “authentic self.” Following this discovery, Boyatzis suggests that individuals examine their “real self.” In other words, current behaviors and a description of strengths and weaknesses. Next, individuals need to establish a learning agenda to “capitalize on your strengths and move you closer to your personal vision which possible working on a weakness or two” (p. 88). Finally, individuals should practice new behaviors and habits and be sure to establish resonant relationships with others to help along the way. I wonder where one’s environment comes into the equation? Is this a necessary component for development? - SJA [...]

[...] A few days ago, I discussed the concept of self, group and system awareness. Along with the authors mentioned and others in the posted comments, I found that Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee are examining this concept as well. In their book Resonant Leadership, they suggest that “when we talk about mindfulness, we mean living in a state of full and conscious awareness of one’s whole self, other people and the context in which we live and work…we define mindfulness as being aware, aware, and attending - to ourselves and the world around us (p. 73). - SJA [...]

[...] I am still reflecting on the amazing week I spent with 65 colleagues at Harvard University. It was one of the most powerful learning experiences I have had in a week-long learning format. Where to start? First, the case-in-point learning methodology was pretty amazing. For those of you who would like to learn more, check out Leadership Can Be Taught by Sharon Parks. The text highlights an interesting approach to teaching leadership. In addition to the learning methodology, we examined adaptive leadership theory - much of which can be found in the book Leadership on the Line. All week I will be highlighting a concept related to the two themes listed above. For now, check out the firm started by Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky - Cambridge Leadership Associates. If you are looking for a challenging, engaging, and transformative learing experience, pencil in The Art and Practice of Leadership Development for 2008. - SJA [...]
