Vertical

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

At the ILA Conference in Vancouver, I met an individual who works for Vertical which is an organization you need to check out!  Vertical has partnered with a number of organizations and offers leadership expeditions. Vertical defines this as ”a structured learning experience through which participants improve their leadership and teamwork skills. The goal is to provide them with opportunities to work in teams, to lead groups of their peers, and to get first-hand experience in leadership.” Where do these take place you ask? Antarctica, Chile, etc.  Learn more here! – Scott J. Allen

The Baldrige Awards

Where can a leader go to get a roadmap of what to do for their organization?

You might want to try looking at the Baldrige National Quality Program.  The program even explains why you should apply.  Take a look at this great resource and learn how you can use this process to build a strategy for success.

Ranking Leadership

Monday, January 28th, 2008

I just learned that U.S. News and World Report has a yearly ranking of “America’s best leaders” Hopefully I’m not the last to realize this and this post is not a duplicate. Anyway, how do you feel about such a ranking category? It appears the magazine has a fairly systematic way of doing it, but I’m not entirely sold on it. This seems to go back to the age-old question of where we should draw the line between scientific measurement and the human experience. – Jim Meehan

CCL Course

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Earlier this month I attended a 1-credit course that was a collaboration between the University of San Diego Leadership Studies Department and the Center for Creative Leadership (one of the locations is here in San Diego). The class focused on “Assessment, Challenge, and Support”. As someone who has been exposed to many leadership training programs and someone who can sometimes can frustrated with “business models” of leadership, I was a tad critical going into the experience-but energized when I left! The two most valuable experiences woven into this two-day intensive course were the 360 Degree Feedback Assessment and the coaching activities. The 360 degree tool we used was Benchmarks and it was neat to see how superiors, bosses, direct reports, and peers view you and interesting trends across the groups. What accompanied this assessment was a book called FYI-For your Improvement that identified different competencies associated with the instrument that are areas one can work on. It provides more information about each competency and ways in which someone can work on developing the competency. The coaching activity brought me back to my counseling practicum days of grad school- in a very good way but with a twist on really focusing on my behaviors. One of my classmates served as a coachee for a case that I developed about a past supervisee, and we played out a possible coaching session. The video taping aspect of this was fantastic as well as getting feedback on how to better approach the situation. Overall, I am very impressed with the Center for Creative Leadership – I recommend checking it out :)Paige Haber
