Two Sides of Leadership

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I work  with a student organization called Students in Free Enterprise. A student (Matt Wooters) developed this video in an effort to educate others about civil war in Uganda. It highlights, quite nicely, the opposing forces at work. Take a look. It is powerful. – Scott J. Allen

Leadership Retreat Fatigue

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Also known as LRF, it may cause uncontrollable non-verbals, loud sighs and twitching. I have been hearing rumblings of this as I work with college students throughout the country. Are students are growing tired of the constant barrage of leadership retreats?  I blogged about this a while back, and have kept an eye out. I would love to hear what all of you are experiencing. This was sparked from the following piece of feedback on a retreat in which I was involved:

  • “I’ve done about every single leadership and personality assessment that is available.  This is the about the 8th leadership retreat I’ve gone to.  I didn’t feel that my leadership changed or was benefited by this experience.”

Yes, it could have been poor curriculum design/delivery, but I know for a fact it is not far from many others out there. So what do you think? Is LRF real?  Here is what I think – Scott J. Allen

The Heart of Change

Friday, February 13th, 2009

This is a quote from John Kotter that I find interesting. It is from his book, The Heart of Change. – Scott J. Allen

“The single most important message this book is very simple. People change what they do less because they are given analysis that shifts their thinking than because they are shown a truth that influences their feelings. This is especially so in large-scale organizational change, where you are dealing with new technologies, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, new strategies, cultural transformation, globalization and e-business – whether in an entire organization, an office, a department, or a work group”

Are Leaders Born or Made?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

An age old question:  Well Dr. Richard Arvey at the University of Minnesota has been looking into this question and has some pretty interesting findings. Check it out and see what you think. – Scott J. Allen
